Vikings upset Sullivan to advance to semifinals

GREENCASTLE -- The West Vigo Vikings ended a 10-game losing streak with a 74-69 victory over the Sullivan Golden Arrows, in the opening game of the Class 3A Sectional at Greencastle High School.

West Vigo was led by Bryan Chestnut with a 23 points, Cogan Keith with 19 and Jordan Pearson with 16.

Sullivan's Derrick DeMoss led the way for the Golden Arrows with 31 points while Evan Baker added 15 points on the night.

With four minutes left in the game, a three-pointer from Sullivan and two free throws by DeMoss put the Golden Arrows in the lead, 55-54.

Down the stretch, West Vigo saw Keith and Chestnut connect on six consecutive free throws to keep the Vikings in front.

Even some last-minute heroics from Sullivan's DeMoss couldn't bring the victory.

West Vigo walked away with a 74-69 victory and a Friday night showdown with Owen Valley at 6 p.m.

The Patriots are 16-7 this year after defeating Greencastle in Tuesday's second game, 73-70.

In regular season action, Owen Valley handed West Vigo a 65-63 defeat on Dec. 2 at Spencer.

In the regular season, Sullivan and the Vikings split, with the Golden Arrows losing to West Vigo on Dec. 30, 71-50. However, Sullivan defeated the Vikings on Feb. 16, 61-55.

The Golden Arrows finished the season with a 14-9 record. West Vigo is 8-15 on the season.

Edgewood will face Brown County in Friday's second game, scheduled to take place at 8 p.m.

Edgewood is the top-ranked team in Class 3A, sporting a 20-0 record. Brown County is 10-10 heading into the postseason.

Next Games -- The Vikings will face Owen Valley in the sectional semifinal Friday at 6 p.m. Sullivan ended the season with a 14-9 mark.
