GHS softball opens with late game win

Wednesday, March 21, 2007

MONTEZUMA -- Greencastle's girls' softball team opened the season with a 5-3 win against Riverton Parke with its underclassman rising to the occasion.

"It was a team win," coach Dave Keller said. "Every kid contributed to the win."

The Tiger Cubs started freshman pitcher Kayla Nobles and she didn't disappoint. She threw seven innings with three strikeouts, three walks and only one earned run.

"Kayla pitched an exceptional game," Keller said. "For her to pitch her first varsity and get the victory was outstanding. She played like a senior."

The Tiger Cubs were down most of the game, 3-2 but rallied in the top of the final inning to grab the victory.

"No matter what the score, we never give up," Keller said.

Erika Collins started the rally, leading off the inning with a double while Kylie Rowings followed with a walk. Nobles put down a bunt to move the runners and beat it out to load the bases. With one out, Veronica Sawyer cracked a double on an 0-2 count to score all three base runners and seal the win for GHS.

On the night, Jessica Miller went 2-for-3 with one RBI and a stolen base, while Sawyer and Collins were each 1-for-3 with a double and Kayla Nobles was 1-for-2.

"I'd rather win the game the way we did, than 9-0," Keller said. "I wanted the girls to go into spring break with a win under the belt."

Greencastle's future looks bright with three sophomores and two freshmen accounting for all of the GHS hits on the night.

The junior varsity game was canceled but their presence was felt in the Greencastle dugout.

"The JV kids were a big part of the rally we had," Keller commented.

Greencastle will face North Putnam April 2 at 5 p.m. at home.
