Shopping center scrapped?

Plans for a new shopping center and potential home improvement store on Greencastle's East Side appear to have been scrapped, according to the developer's website.

Repeated attempts to reach officials with Arizona-based Sandor Development Company by e-mail and phone have been unsuccessful.

However information and a map of the property, which is located just east of the Wal-Mart supercenter, have been removed from the company's website sandordev.com.

Last October, Sandor officials confirmed that they had an option to purchase 30 acres of undeveloped farmland they were calling Ballard Farms, located immediately to the east of the current Wal-Mart shopping plaza and on the west side of Ballard Lane.

At the time, Sandor representative David Goldman told the BannerGraphic that he was working with several national and regional tenants interested in leasing space in the shopping center. Sandor did not actually purchase the land.

Greencastle/Putnam County Economic Development Director Bill Dory told the BannerGraphic recently that he has not been contacted by officials with Sandor.

A map of the project that appeared on the Sandor website until recently depicted space for a 10,000-square-foot home improvement store along with smaller leasable spaces of 4,900 square feet and 1,200 square feet.

Sandor owns the shopping center completed last year on the east side of the Greencastle Kroger.

There are still several empty spaces in the building and plans call for a smaller, secondary structure to be built and additional parking spaces added as future demand dictates.
