Cougars grab early WCC lead

Friday, April 20, 2007

After two weeks of play, the West Central Conference baseball season is in full swing, and the North Putnam Cougars already have a two-game lead in the standings.

With two wins over Cloverdale this week, the Cougars moved their record to 6-0 overall and 4-0 in the WCC. Greencastle, Cascade and Speedway are all tied, two games back, at 2-2 in conference. Of these three, the Cougars have already beaten Greencastle and Speedway one time each.

Elsewhere in the county, Greencastle reached the 2-2 mark after consecutive wins over Cascade on Monday and Tuesday. The Tiger Cubs' season record is 3-2. South Putnam is now 2-3 in the WCC and overall after splitting with Monrovia earlier this week. With Cloverdale's two losses to the Cougars, they are now 1-4 in conference and on the year.

In individual statistics, North Putnam is likewise at the top. At least one Cougar is in the top three of each of three major hitting categories and three major pitching categories.

Speedway's Adam Walton leads the league in batting average at .600.

North's Jake Mullis is third with .412.

The Cougars' Jordan Berry is tied with the Sparkplugs' Walton for the double lead at three. Greencastle's Michael Richardson, Cloverdale's Chad Cummings and North Putnam's Brayden Dahlstrom are tied for third with two.

Putnam County players are dominating the long balls, with Mullis and Cloverdale's Cody Nees leading the way with two. Greencastle's Zac Remsburg and the Clovers' Josh Flory each have one.

In runs batted in, it is once again Mullis at the top with eight. Teammate Berry is tied for second with Speedway's Walton at six.

On the pitching side, Mullis leads the league with a 4-0 record and 38 strikeouts. He is also second in ERA at 0.38.

Greencastle's Kyle Nobles, who has yet to surrender a run, is tops in the league in ERA.

Cloverdale's Nees is third in the league in strikeouts with 23. Greencastle's Derrik Patterson is fifth with 13.

The Putnam County teams all return to conference action Monday at 4:30 p.m. South Putnam will travel to North Putnam, Cloverdale will host Cascade and Greencastle will host Speedway.
