GHS hangs with Speedway

Greencastle softball hung with one of the best class 2A teams in the state for six innings on Monday. Ultimately, four Speedway runs crossed the plate in the seventh, giving the Sparkplugs a 5-0 victory over the Tiger Cubs.

GHS coach Dave Keller called it a "great game."

"Greencastle played right with one of the top teams in the conference. I was happy to compete with Speedway. They are fundamentally sound at every position and (Kristi) Roth is an exceptional pitcher," Keller said.

The Tiger Cubs threatened in the first, with runners at second and third, but were unable to capitalize. Defense stayed solid througout the first six innings.

"I think any opposing coach would take a 1-0 game with Speedway going into the seventh inning, but we couldn't find an answer for Roth. We also had a couple of hits taken away by great defensive plays by Speedway," Keller said.

Roth pitched a complete game, allowing only two hits and striking out 11 Tiger Cubs. For Greencastle, Cassie Alspaugh tossed all seven innings, allowing five hits, three walks and striking out one.

Also worthy of note is that the Tiger Cubs were missing two of their regular starters to illness and injury. Keller had to make a last-minute substitution in centerfield.

"Brooke Lewis stepped in and did a nice job in centerfield as she was inserted into that position at game time. The whole team played like they had everything to gain and nothing to lose.

The GHS junior varsity fell to the Sparkplugs 23-3.

As of press time, no results were available for the Tiger Cubs' Tuesday rematch at Speedway.

The Tiger Cubs return to action Thursday when they travel to North Putnam for a 4:30 p.m. game.

SPEEDWAY -- The Greencastle softball team came up short against the Speedway Sparkplugs, 6-4, Tuesday night on the road.

"Three walks in the first inning with a triple for Speedway was the big difference," coach Dave Keller said. "Speedway is ranked No. 3 in 2A with only one loss, I think we are competing every game. "

Greencastle held tough with Speedway most of the night, trailing by only one run going into the sixth inning. Speedway scored to open the gap to two runs and hold the Tiger Cubs off.

For Greencastle, Tabitha Wilson, Sarah Land and Samantha Sillery all had two hits each, while Dee Wood, Alspaugh, Kayla Nobles and Kylie Rowings each had a hit on the night.

On the mound, Nobles went seven strong innings, throwing for three strikeouts, five walks and four hits.

"We have 1 bad inning every game and until we can stop the bleeding for that inning it will be tough for us to get a win with the caliber of teams we play," Keller commented. "I think these two games were big confidence boosters for our team and it made them believe that they can play with anybody."

Greencastle will travel to take on Monrovia Monday at 4:30 p.m.

At Speedway

Greencastle 210 010 0 -- 4 10 3

Speedway 400 101 0 -- 6 4 3
