Area 30 enrollment said on target

Thursday, April 26, 2007

Recently, the Area 30 Board of Directors requested Area 30 Career Center officials provide it with proposed enrollment numbers to reflect the whole number of students from each of the six schools that make up the enrollment at the center.

Recently, Area 30 Assistant Director Lora Wood, along with Area 30 representative Chad Nunley, provided the updated numbers to the superintendents.

"They just wanted to make sure that all the schools were given an appropriate amount of slots (for each offered program)," Wood said. "We wanted to equalize the amount of slots in each program."

The updated numbers called for a minimum of 10 students in each program, although Wood said officials had spotted a recent trend where some programs had witnessed smaller numbers on an average yearly basis.

"We want to address that," Wood said.

The updated proposal provided by Wood and Nunley showed the numbers -- based on total percentage of students from each school -- were accurate.

"Based on the past three-year average, we are on target with each school corporation," Wood said.

For example, the three-year average showed that the center's 3-D program had a maximum enrollment of 20. The program is only offered in the afternoon.

Two of the students were from Cloverdale while five each came from Greencastle and North Putnam. Three came from Owen Valley while four came from North Putnam.

No Eminence students enrolled in the program.

Based on the three-year average, Greencastle students make up close to 26 percent of the center's enrollment -- the most of the six schools -- while North Putnam students made up 24 percent. South Putnam students made up 18 percent while Owen valley students made up 14 percent. Cloverdale students made up 12 percent and Eminence students made up 6 percent.

The total enrollment of students at Area 30 for the 2004-05 school year was 356 while the number increased to 362 in 2005-06. In 2006-07, the number increased to 367.

In other business, the board:

  • Unanimously approved an overnight field trip for Health Sciences and Vet Tech students to attend the state HOSA competition April 23-25 in Indianapolis. Area 30 Executive Director Michael Walton told the board that Area would provide transportation and approximately 14 students would attend the competition. The chaperones for the trip are Debbie Yates and Kami Hyde.

Greencastle Community School Corp. Supt. Bob Green asked who would be paying the expenses for the students while staying overnight and said the students would pay.

  • Approved financial reports for April.

  • Learned that Walton had recently traded the center's Bobcat for a one with all-wheel steering. Walton informed the board that the trade was within the budget and the new Bobcat would arrive within one month.

  • Learned that auto body students had fixed up a 1991 Thunderbird for the past three months and would be selling the vehicle.

"It looks like a new car," Walton said.

The board meets regularly on the second Tuesday of each month. Its next meeting is scheduled for 10:30 a.m., May 15.
