Community yard sale to benefit A-Way Home

Thursday, May 10, 2007

As the spring temperatures begin to rise to summer temperatures, so do the piles of unwanted items in basements, attics, and corners of bedrooms.

The sorting and cleaning of winter's bulk, outgrown clothing, and used appliances has only begun. Instead of letting it all collect dust, consider donating to a local cause to benefit Putnam County. This month a local group, Friends of A-Way Home Shelter, is gathering gently used clothing items, furniture, appliances, books (no text books), CDs, and movies for a yard sale to benefit the A-Way Home Shelter in Greencastle.

The yard sale will be 8 a.m.-2p.m. Saturday, May 19 at 309 E. Franklin St.

To aid in the collection process, DePauw University students are volunteering through the Hartman Center on DePauw's campus to hold collection times. These will be 4-6 p.m. Sunday, May 13, 5-7 p.m. Wednesday, May 16, and 1-3 p.m. Thursday, May 17. During these designated times there will be large boxes placed in the lobby of each dorm on the DePauw campus for donations.

The general public can also donate to the cause by contacting Angie Weeks, chairperson of Friends of A-Way Home Shelter, at 653-3240. Ask about pick-up or drop-off of items for the yard sale. The group has storage space for larger furniture items that are in gently-used status.
