Fair queen contestants now sought

Players in the Greater Greencastle Chamber of Commerce Golf Scramble at Old Hickory Golf Course on May 18 will have an opportunity to win a vehicle by hitting a hole-in-one. A golfer that hits a hole-in-one on No. 2 will win a 2007 Chevy Impala sponsored by Andy Mohr Chevrolet while a golfer hitting a hole-in-one on No. 9 will win a 2007 Jeep Wrangler from York Chrysler, Jeep and Dodge. Putnam County Fair Queen contestant applications are now being accepted and are due by Tuesday, May 29.

This year's queen contest will be conducted at 7 p.m. Saturday, July 14 at the Putnam County Fairgrounds.

Contestants will appear in professional wear and an evening gown. Each contestant will also participant in a personal interview with the judges prior to the contest.

Applications can be picked up in the Putnam County Extension Office, First National Bank, Putnam County Juvenile Probation Office and at the Styling Station.

Applications should be returned to Renee Marsteller in the juvenile probation office on the third floor of the courthouse, or mailed to 5147 W. CR 525 South, Greencastle, 46135.

Committee members are Renee Marsteller, Beth Flint, Natalie Pritchard, Jennifer Porter, Jenney Taylor, Kelly Hilburn, Jody Parmley, Dee Bum-gardner, Raymond McCloud, Lindsay Harwood, Al Harwood and the 2006 Fair Queen Jordan Zaring.

The rules and responsibilities for the fair queen contestants are as follows:

  • Each contestant must be at least age 16 and cannot have had her 21st birthday as of the first day of the 2007 Indiana State Fair Queen Contest.

  • Contestants must be unmarried and must never have been married.

  • A contestant must be a Putnam County resident and represent Putnam County in the state fair pageant. The only exception is she may reside in an adjoining county if she is a 4-H member in Putnam County.

  • Each contestant must be an active member of at least one worthwhile organization in her community, such as church group, Girl Scouts, 4-H, and must have completed at least five years in 4-H.

  • Contestants cannot have a child or be knowingly pregnant at the time of the county fair queen pageant or the state fair queen contest.

  • Contestants cannot have any visible tattoos or piercing, other than the ears, during the competition or while representing the Putnam County Fair.

  • No professional model is eligible for the state fair contest. A professional model is one who earns her livelihood by modeling. A girl who works for a high school or college fashion board is not considered a professional model.

  • The evening of July 14, the contest will include each contestant appearing in two categories: professional wear and formal wear.

  • Each contestant must attend and participate in the personal interview portion of the contest.

  • Contestants must participate in weekly pre-contest training sessions at the fairgrounds community building beginning in June and July. First practice will be at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 5. Parents may attend the first practice and are invited to do so. Practices are mandatory. No missed meetings unless approved by the committee.

  • The fair queen will be selected from all contestants on the basis of beauty, poise and personality, which will be determined in both the preliminary judging and the evening of the public contest in July. Miss Congeniality will be selected by the contestants.

  • Meetings are closed to contestants and committee members.

  • The winner must represent Putnam County in the contest of Miss Indiana State Fair or forfeit her title and prizes to the first runner-up.

  • Each contestant and their parent will be required to sign a contract regarding rules and responsibilities prior to participation in the Putnam County contest.
