Greencastle downs Turkey Run

The Greencastle girls' tennis team closed its regular season with a dominating victory over Turkey Run, 5-0. Although the weather was threatening all evening, coach Trish Lowe's team was able to get the match in and claim the victory.
"This was a nice way to finish our regular season," Lowe said.
The Tiger Cubs finish with a 9-3 mark.
Number one singles Kelsey Hennette led the way with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over the Warriors' Shelly Barr. Rena Warren had similar success at number two, defeating Jeanne Wrights-man, 6-1, 6-2. The Tiger Cubs' Carol LaFoe had to go to a tiebreaker in the first set, but also won in straight sets over Jessie Norman, 7-6 (7-3), 6-2.
On the doubles side, the Tiger Cubs' Kayla Birt and Savannah Provine defeated Tara Smith and Becky Harbison at number one, 6-2, 6-2. The GHS number two doubles team of Emma Kaiser and Kristen Flint completed the sweep with a 6-2, 7-5 win over Turkey Run's Lisa Lamb and Candale Foxworthy.
The junior varsity also had a good night, winning 3-2. The JV finished with a record of 7-4-1.
"The entire team has shown much improvement," Lowe said. "We are hoping to continue as a team passed this weekend."
This weekend, the Tiger Cubs are in sectional play at Northview. They open Friday at 5 p.m. against South Putnam. GHS defeated South, 3-2, in the season opener.

Eagles fall to Rox
At Rockville Tuesday, South Putnam closed its girls' tennis regular season with a 5-0 loss to the Rox. In spite of the defeat, Eagle coach Johnnie Briones was proud of how his team played against such a veteran team as Rockville.
"We played well against a very, very good Rockville team that is dominated by seniors," Briones said.
Number two singles Whitney Warren had the closest singles match of the night, falling 6-0, 7-5, to the Rox' Mackenzie Davis. It was just Warren's second loss of the year. Shelley Douglass and Liz Mink also lost in straight sets.
It was more of the same on the doubles side, as Chelsea Clark and Sam Callahan lost 6-1, 6-1, and Megan Criss and Cassie Davis fell 6-3, 6-4.
The junior varsity defeated Rockville, 3-2. Victories came from Ashley Ross in singles and from Megan Klotz and Tabitha Arnold in doubles.
"The JV played very well and had a fantastic season. It looks very promising for the future," Briones said. "I am very proud of both the varsity and JV."
The Eagles now turn their attention to what Briones calls a "tough draw in sectional" with county rival Greencastle. The Tiger Cubs defeated the Eagles, 3-2, in the season's first match. They face off again in the sectional semifinals Friday at 5 p.m. at Northview.
