NASHVILLE -- The Greencastle girls' softball team squared off against the Brown County Eagles in the first round of the class 3A Sectional 29 Monday, and the Tiger Cubs bowed out of post-season play, 7-2. The Tiger Cubs ends the season with a 5-19 record.

The seventh inning proved to be the tipping point for the Tiger Cubs' season.

"We didn't play all that well," GHS coach Dave Keller said. "But we played well enough to win this game until the seventh inning. We've struggled all year hitting and fielding in crucial situations and tonight we struggled in both aspects."

The Tiger Cubs and the Eagles were knotted at 2-all heading into the final inning, but the Eagles started to take control due to a few GHS errors.

Brown County's first two batter reached on errors, then the next two were walked, giving the Eagles a 3-2 lead. Brown County would add a double and three more runs and left the Tiger Cubs on the losing end.

Greencastle grabbed the lead early as they scored in the bottom of the first on a very unconventional score. Cassie Alspaugh scored an in-the-park home run on a bunt with one out. After the pitchers' throw sailed over the first baseman, Alspaugh rounded and motored home for the GHS score.

Greencastle's other run came in the fourth after two doubles in the inning. Tabitha Wilson led off with a double and after going to third on a fielder's choice. The run was brought home by a Sarah Land's double down the third base line.

Alspaugh pitched four innings, collecting three strikeouts, two hits and seven walks. Kayla Nobles came in and threw three innings, giving up four walks, four strikeouts and two hits.

"This group has improved so much from the beginning of the season," Keller said. "They were in every game this year and learned so much since we began.

"I can't say enough about Tabitha Wilson and Kylie Rowings. When the success of this program turns into wins in the next couple of years, we will owe a tremendous amount to these two individuals," Keller continued. "They will be missed."
