Four Greencastle runners on fast track to state

WEST LAFAYETTE -- On Tuesday, four Greencastle High School girls' track runners managed to advance to the Indiana High School Athletic Association State Finals after placing among the top three in their respective events at the West Lafayette Track Regional.

Heading to state competition this year from Putnam County are Greencastle's Megan Clodfelter, Laura Weatherford, Jamie Patterson and Laura English.

The top three finishers at regional event earn a trip to the state finals, which will take place June 2 at the Robert C. Haugh Track and Field Complex on the campus of Indiana University in Bloomington.

Patterson and Weatherford will both compete in multiple events at the state meet.

Patterson won the 100-meter dash at the regional Tuesday with a time of 12.69 while Weatherford placed second in the 200-meter dash at 26.16.

In addition, both are members of Greencastle's 400-meter relay team that won the regional title as well.

"We ran well in all the events," GHS coach Garry Anderson said. "The meet was very hot and contested very hot as well.

"This is quite an honor for the girls, the team, the school, and the community. I'm sure everybody is as proud of our team's accomplishments as I am."

The 400 relay team of Clodfelter, Weatherford, Patterson and English also advanced to the state meet after winning Tuesday's regional with a time of 49.23, setting a regional record.

"Our handoffs in the 400 relay were very clean and quick and proved to be one of the major factors in winning the race," Anderson said. "The record we broke at the regional for 400 relay was our own record we set last sason."

The Tiger Cubs had several other participants place at the regional Tuesday.

Clodfelter placed fifth in the 200 with a time of 26.75 while Hannah Serlin was sixth in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:23.87.

Greencastle's 1,600-meter relay team of Clodfelter, Bethany Schroeder, Serlin and Weatherford also placed ninth with a time of 4:14.05 while Jenny Peart placed 12th in the pole vault with a leap of 7-6. Schroeder also placed fifth in the long jump at 16-2 3/4 and Caitlyn Gannaway was sixth in the shot put with a toss of 38-3 3/4.

As a team, Greencastle scored 42 points, placing fifth overall. Hamilton Southeastern won the team title with 98 points.

South Putnam was also represented at the regional.

Junior Shelby Johnston competed in both hurdle events, placing seventh in the 100-meter hurdles at 16.77 and 13th in the 300-meter hurdles at 51.15.
