South finishes tops among county squads

South Putnam's varsity team took third place in the overall competition and was the 2007 Putnam County champion. Team members in include Bri Bartly, Rose Bartly, Tiffani Cox, Lindsey Hettich, Sarah Holloway, Shelby Johnston, Alonna Lawson, Alyssa Lollar, Amanda Lund, Melissa Miles, Alissa Priest, Caitlyn Russell, Melissa Scales, Paige Truxal, Brittany Wood and Jessica York.

Led by this year's Outstanding Putnam County Senior Cheerleader Shelby Johnston, the South Putnam cheerleading squad took first among county schools in Thursday night's Putnam County Cheerleading Contest at the outdoor arena at the fairgrounds.

The Eagles were third in the overall competition, behind the champion Tri-West Bruins and the runner-up Mooresville Pioneers.

All four host schools from Putnam County performed in the varsity division with Cloverdale, Greencastle and North Putnam all competing as well. The Tiger Cubs actually took home the Spirit Award at night's end.

The GHS varsity team of Shayne Gardner, Ashley Lacher, Briana Martin, Bailee Parker, Jessica Pasho, Miranda Patterson, Hannah Pettit, Amber Terry, Brittany Thompson, D'Aundrea Williams and Kay Wood won the Spirit Award.

Non-Putnam County schools also competing in the varsity were Danville, Cascade, Riverton Parke and Southmont.

Having five counties represented in the contest set a record for the Putnam County event.

In the freshman division, only Greencastle and South Putnam competed, with GHS winning the title.

In the junior varsity division, Avon was the lone competitor and took the trophy.
