Larry E. Maurer

Larry E. Maurer, 65, Center Point, died Monday at his residence. Born in Clay County, he was the son of Cecil Maurer and Della Gertrude Mong Maurer. He married Phyllis Stevenson Maurer on Feb. 13, 1960, and she survives.

He attended Ashboro High School until it closed in 1959. He graduated from Brazil High School in 1960. He worked from the age of 14 in farming, first at the Dietz property and then later for his wife's family.

He also worked for Ethyl-Visqueen until 1976 when he left to work for Brazil Coal and Clay. He worked as a loader operator at both Brazil Coal and Beech Coal Company from which he retired in 2002. He had also worked at Tredegar for a time in the late 1980s.

He was a lifelong members of the Center Point Volunteer Fire Department where he served as fire chief for more than 20 years. Several years ago he earned his EMT certification.

Survivors include his wife; children Leanne True and husband Russ, Steven Maurer and wife Kelly, and Christine Heffner and husband Marty; 11 grandchildren, four great-grandchildren; three sisters, Betty Belasco and husband Robert, Texas, Edna Ann Maybaugh and husband Ronald, Greencastle, Judy Muenster, Greenfield; one brother, Terry Maurer, Salem, Ind.; one stepbrother, Dale Burkitt and wife Vicki, Seelyville; an uncle; several nieces, nephews and other family.

He was preceded in death by his father and mother, step-father George Burkitt, and a nephew.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Lawson-Miller Chapel, with Rev. Myron James officiating. Burial will follow at Center Point Cemetery.

Visitation is 4-8 p.m. Wednesday and again Thursday prior to services at the funeral home.
