Airport Appreciation Day set

Tuesday, September 4, 2007

Greencastle is known for its DePauw University. However, it has a small but very well equipped airport on the east side of town.

Putnam County is very proud of its airport and holds an airport appreciation weekend annually on the weekend following Labor Day. This year, Airport Appreciation Weekend will take place Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 8 and 9.

The Dixie Chopper Business Center is located at the Putnam County Airport. It provides a restaurant, classrooms, which can be used for meetings and parties, deluxe rooms for sleeping and it is open 24 hours a day.

EAA Chapter #1374, the Dixie Chopper Business Center and Putnam County Airport Board sponsor the Airport Appreciation Weekend.

Local pilots and pilots from nearby airports fly their planes in for a static display. Qualified pilots with their airplanes can fly children ages 8 through 17 for their first airplane ride with parental or guardian permission.

The children are then called Young Eagles and their names are submitted to EAA headquarters in Osh Kosh, Wisc. To be entered into the world's largest logbook.

Due to the size of the airport, air shows are not presented. However, visitors can take an airplane or helicopter ride for a nominal fee.

Also, if they have a car, truck or motorcycle that they are proud of, they can enter it in the Putnam County Rods and Relics Car Show. The show will be held at the airport on Saturday, Sept. 8.

Food will be available both days in the hanger by Final Approach Bistro. There is no charge for parking or to roam around the airport.

But visitors must obey the safety personnel.
