GHS girls' soccer rolls over West Vigo

Wednesday, September 12, 2007

It was a beautiful night in the pitch for the Greencastle girls' soccer team, made even more beautiful by an 8-0 win over visiting West Vigo Tuesday night.

Greencastle freshman Katie Farris puts in a goal with 6:23 to go in the game to put the Tiger Cubs up 7-0.

The Tiger Cubs dominated the night but no with its regular crew. GHS head coach Maurice McKee worked a different starting lineup and the outcome was a good one.

"I shook the team up tonight. I played a different team," McKee said. "I did not start out with the varsity. I actually gave all the seniors an opportunity to play tonight. The Monrovia game is senior night and I wanted to make sure the girls had some playing time together on the field against another team.

"The last 12 minutes was full blown varsity, just to see if what we had been practicing would materialize and they showed me they could do it," McKee added.

Junior Hannah Spencer provided three goals for the Tiger Cubs, while Crystal VanArsdale, Katie Farris and Whitney Brotherton each scored a goal.

Greencastle got on the board early with Spencer scoring at the 34:34 mark of the first half. Spencer scored her goal after West Vigo's goalie deflected shots by Spencer and Grace Fisher.

VanArsdale's goal was a high arching shot that snuck past the goalies outstretched hands with 32:46 on the clock to give the Tiger Cubs a 2-0 advantage at the break.

In the second half, VanArsdale provided an assist to Brotherton at 23:39 on the clock to push the Tiger Cubs lead to 3-0. VanArsdale would score again with the West Vigo defense out of position at 11:30 in the half.

Spencer scored her second goal of the night on an assist from Laura English with 9:27 on the clock. At 8:33, a shot deflected off a Viking defender into the goal to make the score 5-0 in favor of the Tiger Cubs.

Freshman Katie Farris scored on left-footed blast two minutes later and Spencer added her third goal at the 3:03 mark to end the Greencastle assault.

Rebounding from a tough loss Saturday, McKee stated he believes his team overcame what ultimately was their undoing -- communication.

"Last Saturday we did not play up to our potential at all. Tonight was a little tale-tell to see if we could start communicating with each other and they showed me the last 10-12 minutes they can play the way I want them to play. I was very pleased," McKee commented.

The Tiger Cubs will host Southmont at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
