GHS officially dedicates field to Monnett

During Thursday night's boys' soccer match up between Greencastle and Cascade, the GHS soccer field was officially dedicated in memory of Dee S. Monnett with the unveiling of a new sign above the scoreboard which will bare his name.

Current GHS Athletic Director Scott Knapp said a few brief words before handing the microphone over to former A.D. Doug Miller who spoke about the devotion Monnett had for the game and the contributions he made to the game.

"For Dee, it (soccer) was a passion," Miller said.

The most powerful comments of the evening came from Scott Monnett, son of Dee and a 1995 GHS graduate. He spoke at length about the passion, the love and the dedication his father gave to the sport he loved. For the Monnett family, soccer was more than a sport -- it was a way of life.

"My dad was such an ambassador for the game of soccer," Monnett said. "He fell in love with it because my sister, my step-brothers and I loved the game, so that's how he got hooked. It's quite an honor for me because he did so much for soccer in Greencastle."

Monnett pointed out that is wasn't an easy path to get Greencastle soccer where it is today. He spoke of the tremendous support that his father and others who believed in the soccer program received from its inception.

"It was phenomenal from the very first days in the early 90s. The hoops some of the parents had to jump through to get it done. Like paying for uniforms and equipment on their own, trying to find places for us to practice. The support has been phenomenal through the years," Monnett commented.

So now when a goal is scored at Greencastle and eyes move upward to focus on the scoreboard, they will see the name of a man who received from the sport exactly what he put into it -- love.
