Greencastle's Hannah Spencer (white) slides under the Edgewood goalie to capture a second half goal. The score put the Tiger Cubs up 3-0.

The Greencastle girls' soccer team rebounded from an uncharacteristic first half to defeat the Edgewood Mustangs 4-0 Monday night.

The Tiger Cubs started the game unusually out of sync and struggled for most of the first half before finding its way.

Greencastle was on its heels for the first nine minutes of the game, but Hannah Spencer helped turn things around at the 31:05 mark, when she split the defense and tapped a shot past the Edgewood keeper. Greencastle held to the lead as the half ended.

Coach Maurice McKee acknowledged the fact his team was out of sync.

"Yes they were," he said. "We had a little talk at half time, because they were not playing to their potential at all. They need to be able to play the moment they step on the field."

In the second half, the Tiger Cubs found their groove and turned up the heat on the Mustangs.

Senior Grace Fisher scored a the 28:25 on a curving shot that slide into the goal and put the Tiger Cubs up 2-0. Spencer added another goal with 19:08 on the clock and Fisher drove the final nail into the Mustangs' coffin when she jammed a shot into the net with 0:52 remaining.

"Hannah has been our top scorer all year long and Grace is close behind. Tonight she (Grace) showed us that she can take it in there and knew right when to release it at the right time because she had the goalie committed," McKee said.

Defense was a solid for the Tiger Cubs and McKee singled out the play of Becky Grivas as playing important role.

"Becky (Grivas) is very strong on our defense all season long. The position is actually called a sweeper and she's more like a vacuum cleaner. She hustles out every ball," McKee commented.

After the struggles of the first half, the team assessed its play and made the necessary adjustments.

"They started moving themselves around which is what we need to do to confuse the other team and to make plays happen," McKee said.

The Tiger Cubs will host Monrovia at 6 p.m. Thursday. The seniors will be honored at halftime of the match.
