Firefighters gearing up for annual open house
Greencastle firefighters are polishing up their fire engines and straightening up the firehouse, as they get ready for their annual community open house, set for 3-6 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 16.
Firefighter Christy Glass, who is the department's head fire prevention officer, said she has planned lots of fun activities, suitable both for adults and children alike.
They include a very special visit by "Sparky the Fire Pup" and his cousin, "Sparky the Fire Pumper Dog" who drives his red fire engine around the firehouse and talks to children about fire safety. He also has a fire hose that squirts water without warning.
Also available will be the fire department fire safety trailer, or "Smoke House," as it is referred to by the firefighters. It allows visitors to experience what it is like in a real fire, complete with simulated smoke.
The fire department also held a coloring contest for children and winners are asked to come to the firehouse at 5:30 p.m. to have their picture taken for the BannerGraphic.
Fun set aside, Glass says the firefighters look forward to this event every year because it gives them a chance to meet the public and have the public -- especially the children --meet them. The firefighters believe it is important for children to get to know them so that in the event of real fire, they won't be afraid.
"We hold the open house every year just to let people see us and know what we're all about," Glass said.
The event coincides with Fire Prevention Month, which takes place across the country in October.
Visitors to the firehouse located on South Indiana Street, a block south of the Putnam County Courthouse, will also have a chance to tour the station and get an up close and personal look at a real fire truck.
There will also be food and refreshments for all who attend.
The open house is not the only activity the fire department has planned. During the week of Oct. 8-12, firefighters will be getting out in the local schools and speaking to students about the importance of fire safety.
