DEPAUW WEEKEND ROUNDUP: Tigers score on final drive to defeat Panthers, Moore rushes for 182 yards

HOOVER, ALA. -- DePauw quarterback Spud Dick drove the Tigers 66 yards in six plays and tossed a 21-yard touchdown pass to Bryan Mulligan with 44 seconds left giving the Tigers a 28-24 win over Birmingham-Southern at Regions Park.

DePauw improved to 4-1 with the win, while the Panthers dropped to 0-3 in their first season of football since 1939.

Dick completed five of six passes on the drive including a key 26-yarder to Chris Gasbarra on third down.

The Tigers held a four-point lead and the ball before a fumble at their own 41 gave Birmingham-Southern the ball with just under three minutes remaining. Three plays later quarterback Joe Thigpen scampered 30 yards for the Panthers' first lead of the game, 24-21, with 2:05 left.

DePauw's Curtis Moore scored two first-quarter rushing touchdowns of two and nine yards to give the Tigers a 14-0 lead before Birmingham-Southern closed the halftime margin to 14-10 on Alex Streetman's 31-yard pass from Joe Thigpen and Jonah Fryfogle's 34-yard field goal.

The Tigers extended their lead to 21-10 on their first series of the second half as Dick tossed a 39-yard scoring pass to Jeff Bonner. The Panthers answered with a 13-play, 81-yard drive which culminated in Thigpen's 1-yard run.

Moore finished with a career-high 182 rushing yards in his first collegiate start, while Dick completed 25 of 38 passes for 254 yards. He connected on nine of 11 in the second half. Mulligan hauled in nine for 91 yards, while Bonner caught six for 73 yards. Thigpen rushed for 33 yards and threw for 230 to lead the Panthers.

DePauw totaled 478 yards of offense including 224 on the ground, while Birmingham-Southern finished with 353 yards.

Ryan McElwain led the DePauw defense with nine tackles, while Tarren Collins, Tyler Doane and Jevon Pruitt each had eight. The Tigers sack Thigpen seven times with Doane totaling a team-high 3.5. Brad Stockdale, Trae Strain and Justin Dunn each had nine stops for the Panthers.

DePauw hosts Trinity at 1 p.m. on Saturday, October 13.

DPU Volleyball wins fifth straight

TERRE HAUTE -- DePauw improved to 17-7 on the season and extended its win streak to five straight with wins over Illinois College (30-14, 30-21, 22-30, 30-15) and Bluffton (30-23, 30-24, 30-22).

Katey Larson paced the Tigers with 12 kills against Illinois College, while Ali Smith totaled 24 assists and Sarah Drew added 21. Kate Carrico recorded six service aces and 17 digs, while Adrienne Cobb totaled five blocks.

Erin Cunningham led DePauw with 14 kills against Bluffton, while Drew had 35 assists and 15 digs. Kristen Chyoweth led with three service aces, while Cobb had nine blocks.

DePauw mens' team wins Classic

CLAYTON -- DePauw shot a tournament-record 293 in Saturday's first round and finished with a record 591 on the way to capturing the DePauw Small College Classic at Deer Creek Golf Club.

Lindenwood finished second with a 597 followed by Thomas More at 602 and Anderson at 606. Lindenwood's Jon Dold was the medalist with a 137.

DePauw's Chase King shot a tournament-record 67 in today's second round for a two-day total of 143 and a second-place finish. Rob Harper tied for fourth with a 148 including Saturday's 69.

Danny Stetson was tied for eighth with a 149 followed by Peter Haller in 16th at 152 and Jake Walsh in a tie for 20th at 155. Michael Reed played as an individual and tied for 10th with a 150.

The all-tournament team consisted of Jon Dold (Lindenwood), Chase King (De Pauw), Justin Ridge (Franklin), Jordan Vice (Wabash), Marty Arnzen (Thomas More), Joe Ruzick (Thomas More), Rob Harper (De Pauw), Lance Ramsey (Anderson), Danny Stetson (De Pauw) and Scott Schomburg (Anderson).

DePauw rounds out the fall season at the Otterbein Invitational on October 14-15.

DPU womens' soccer blanks Millsaps

The DePauw womens' team scored four times in the first half and scored a season-high seven goals in a 7-0 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference win over Millsaps. The Tigers improved to 3-9 overall and 1-2 in the SCAC, while the Majors dropped to 3-7-1 overall and 0-4-1 in the conference.

Kristen Ellis scored once in each half to lead the Tigers, while Julia Drummond, Kristen McMahon, Lindsay Lund, Sarah MacGregor and Jennifer Johnson each added one. MacGregor. Lund, Katy Phillips, Laura Kissinger, Stephanie Patton and Lauren DaSilveira each had one assist in the win.

Brooke Shipley recorded one save in goal for the Tigers and was joined by Adrenna Jones and Lauren Palfrey for the shutout.
