Fillmore couple airlifted after crash
Two people were airlifted Friday night from a car accident that ended on a set of railroad tracks near Fillmore.
Police and firefighters were called to the scene of a single-car accident at around 5:40 p.m. near the intersection of CR 400 East and CR 75 North (Right-of-Way Road).
Putnam County Sheriff's Deputy Gregg Slover arrived on the scene to find 34-year-old Sonya Benassi, Fillmore, and her passenger, Tracy Benassi, age unknown, still inside the couple's 1996 Chevrolet Camaro and sitting on the railroad tracks. It didn't appear the car had rolled over.
Slover said he did not know why the couple's car left the roadway and slid down the embankment to the tracks below because there were no skid marks or other visible signs of a cause.
The husband and wife were alert but confused when medics from Life Line helicopter airlifted them from the scene, Slover said.
Officers believe the Benassis were wearing their seatbelts at the time of the accident.
It was unclear what types of injuries they may have sustained.
Slover said he thought the couple was airlifted to an Indianapolis hospital, but he did not know the name as of presstime Friday.
Assisting at the scene included Fillmore Fire, Operation Life and a DNR Conservation Officer. Deputies Dough Nally and Joe Tesmer also responded.
