Marjorie G. Akers, 93, Greencastle, died Thursday morning at Putnam County Hospital.

Born in Hammond, Ill., she was the daughter of Jesse Raymond and Clara (Bowen) South.

She was a 1932 graduate of Bainbridge High School and later attended Indiana University School of Nursing, graduating in 1936. She married Eugene Francis Akers on Oct. 10, 1936, and he preceded her in death on Nov. 3, 2001.

She was a registered nurse for 49 years, having worked at Lafayette Home Hospital, Evanston General Hospital and Putnam County Hospital.

She was a member of the D.A.R., Mother's Study Club, Crescent Club, Century Club, Garden Club, Registered Nurse Club, Neighbors Bible Study Club, Christian Women's Fellowship and Delta Theta Tau.

Survivors include her sons, Bowen E. Akers and wife Janet, Greensboro, Ga., and Stephen J. Akers and wife Audrey, West Lafayette; two brothers, Don South, Bainbridge, and Howard Dean South, Rose City, Mich.; a sister, Evelyn Varner, Knoxville, Tenn.; seven grandchildren, and 13 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two brothers Jesse and Stanley South, and two sisters, Rowena Roush and Irene Borncamp.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Hopkins-Rector Funeral Home with Rev. Steve Williams officiating. Burial will be at the Brick Chapel Cemetery.

Visitation is 6-8 p.m. Friday.
