North and Speedway meet again tonight

BAINBRIGE -- The paths of the North Putnam Cougars and the Speedway Sparkplugs continue to cross.

Over their past 10 meetings, the Sparkplugs have had the Cougars' number, winning seven of 10 contests. But the Cougars have won the past three games and look to make it four Friday.

Last season, the Cougars defeated the Sparkplugs in the regional 23-18 and in their rematch this season, the Cougars held Speedway to only eight points, winning 21-8.

During the contest, the cougars forced the Sparkplugs into four turnovers; two interceptions and two fumbles, and dominated the Plugs on the ground. North ran for 256 yards on 47 carries, with Adam Vondersaar providing 96 of the yards.

Both North Putnam and Speedway have proven themselves to be offensive juggernauts this season, but defense will play a key role in determining the victor.

North Putnam touts the state's most stingy defense, allowing a minuscule four points per contest as opposed to Speedway's 11.

A win against Speedway will set up a match-up with either the Monrovia Bulldogs or Cascade Cadets, teams the Cougars manhandled earlier in the season.

The Cougars defeated the Cadets in the third game of the season, winning 62-14. North Putnam scored a whopping 42 points in the opening quarter on their way to the win. The Cougars had two running backs go over 100 yards on the night, with Vondersaar rushing for 149 yards and Kyle Rooker rushing for 135.

When the cougars met the Bulldogs seven games into the season, a battle hardened Cougar squad rolled to a 28-0 victory.

Griffen Dahlstrom was a perfect 4-for-4 on the night, collecting 86 yards and two touchdowns in the win.

The Cougars take their 10-0 record to Speedway in a showdown with the Sparkplugs at 7 p.m. Friday.
