New pizza joint approved in Cloverdale

CLOVERDALE â€" The Cloverdale Plan Commission unanimously approved the plans for a new downtown pizza delivery restaurant Thursday evening.

Owners Rance Tackett and John Lenington are in the process of renovating the former NAPA auto parts building and hope to open in December, Tackett said.

Rancella's will offer pizza delivery, carryout and a dine-in buffet and salad bar, he added.

After about 10 minutes of reviewing the layout and asking questions about parking and building inspections, the board voted 5-0 to approve the plan.

At the Cloverdale Board of Zoning Appeals meeting, members voted 5-0 to recommend that the town council adopt an ordinance that would allow the BZA to recoup court and attorney costs from lawsuits the board files against property owners who are in violation of zoning laws.

Board Vice President Terry Puffer offered the motion after the owners of Steele's Auto and Wrecker Service asked whether the board was going to address an ongoing dispute concerning Discount Tire Company's operation of a wrecker service in town.

In April 2006 the Board of Zoning Appeals issued a letter to Jeff Everman, the owner of the business, staying that he was in violation of town zoning ordinances. None of the current BZA members were on the board when the letter was issued.

Despite Puffer's motion, board President Dave Lyons, in his discussion with the Steele's, said Everman had promised to operate his wrecker service out of Greencastle. The meant he was not in violation of the ordinance, he added.
