INDIANAPOLIS -- The Greencastle Tiger Cubs boys' basketball team traveled to Speedway Friday night, hoping to remain unbeaten in West Central Conference play against the Sparkplugs.

The Tiger Cubs had never before beaten Speedway on their home floor, but Greencastle ended that streak by winning against the athletic Sparkplugs, 66-55.

"We've never beaten Speedway here at their place before, so this was a great win for us tonight," commented Greencastle coach Troy Greenlee after the game.

The Tiger Cubs led the Sparkplugs at the end of the first quarter, 14-13, as Drew Evens, Austin Miller, and Brennan Burks, were able to score for Greencastle in the period.

Greencastle completely dominated the second quarter, outscoring Speedway, 19-4, with Evens, Burks, Kendall Faust, and Ashton Marshall providing the scoring in the stanza. In a 1:19 stretch of the quarter, Marshall stole three consecutive Sparkplug passes, scoring twice on those steals.

At halftime, with his team leading, 33-17, Greenlee warned his players that Speedway would scramble to get back in the game, which they did, going to a full-court press in the second half.

However, the Tiger Cubs led 51-36 at the end of the third quarter, as Justin Bartrum and Wade Huber joined their teammates in the scorebook.

Speedway made a fervent run at Greencastle in the final period, narrowing the lead to seven points with 1:10 left in the game, at 62-55, but the Tiger Cubs held the Sparkplugs scoreless during the remainder of the game, and Evens, Burks, and Faust scored the final points of the game for Greencastle, resulting in the final score of 66-55.

"We did a nice job of keeping our composure at the end of the game when Speedway was really putting the pressure on us, and our guys really did a nice job getting us the win," added Greenlee.

Greencastle had three players scoring double figures, Burks with 23, Evens with 16, and Miller with 12.

Marshall followed with six, Faust had five, and Bartrum and Huber closed out the Tiger Cub scoring with two points each.

Burks led the Tiger Cubs in rebounds with a game-high nine boards, Bartrum had a game-high six assists, and Marshall had a game-high four steals.

The Tiger Cubs (6-2, 1-0 WCC) travel to West Vigo Saturday night (tonight) to play the Vikings. The junior varsity game begins at 6:00.
