The 2007-08 Putnam County Public Library author series continues its season by bringing renowned illustrator Chris Soentpiet for the program "Picturing the World" at 6 p.m. Monday, Jan. 28 to 103 E. Poplar St., Greencastle.

An award-winning children's picture book creator, Soentpiet is the recipient of the Society of Illustrator's top prize, the gold medal for "Peacebound Trains." His other prestigious honors include the Parent's Magazine Best Book of the Year for "Something Beautiful." Thrice winner of the International Reading Association (IRA) Book Award for "More Than Anything Else," "Molly Bannaky" and "Coolies" -- which also won the Parent's Choice Gold Award.

In his presentation he uses slides to give the viewers an insight into the process of creating his award-winning picture books. A fun drawing demonstration, time for Q&A, and a book signing will follow. Also, a limited number of Soentpiet's fine art prints will be available to purchase.

All of the books can be used as part of the teaching curriculum or as a supplement to enhance subjects such as immigration, cultural diversity, city life, war, adoption. Celebrate Lunar New Year (also known as Chinese New Year), African-American History, American History, and more. Art activities pertaining to Chris' books increase the interest and excitement of reading.

This is an ideal program to jump-start conversations at home or at school about adoption, multi-cultural literature, and American history while celebrating the love of reading and the arts. The program is free and suitable for all ages. For more information, call 653-2755 or visit the website at www.putnam.lib.in.us.
