Elizabeth Julian White

Elizabeth Julian White, 96, sister of noted chemist and DePauw alumnus Percy L. Julian, died Dec. 30, 2007 in Baltimore, Md.

Born In Montgomery, Ala., she came to Greencastle as a child and graduated from Depauw University in 1928, where she held the distinction of being the first black woman on the women's swim team. She later earned master's degrees in romance languages and English from Indiana University and New York University.

She married John W. White, a legislative advocate for the postal union, in 1944. He preceded her in death in 1993.

She had a lengthy teaching career, and taught at Wiley College in Texas in the same era as the story currently being retold in the film, "The Great Debaters."

Surviving are a daughter, Bettye Jean M. Stuckey, Baltimore, as well as by several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service was conducted on Jan. 12 at the March Funeral Home in Baltimore.
