Deadlines approach for 2008 primary election
Though primary elections are still months away, the deadline for citizens to throw their hat into the political arena and declare their candidacy is rapidly approaching.
The 2008 primary election is slated for May 6, but before campaigns get underway, candidates must file with the Putnam County Voter Registration office by noon Friday, Feb. 22.
On the local ballot this year at the county level are the offices of Superior Court Judge, Auditor, Treasurer, Coroner, Districts 1 and 3 County Commissioners, three At-Large County Council seats, Republican Precinct Committee members. The fall general election ballot will also include candidates for the Cloverdale, South Putnam and North Putnam school boards.
Local voters will also be casting ballots for the following state and national contests: U.S. President, U.S. Senate, District 8 U.S. Representative, Governor, District 24 or 27 State Senator, District 44 State Representative, Attorney General and Superintendent of Public Instruction.
To date, only a hand full of local citizens have declared their candidacy.
Incumbent Republican Gene R. Beck, Bainbridge, will seek re-election to the District 1 County Commissioner seat.
Republican Sharon Owens, Greencastle, will seek the position of Putnam County Treasurer.
Republican Cara L. Goodin, Greencastle, will seek an At-Large County Council seat.
Republican Kathleen A. Van Arsdale, Greencastle, will seek election to the District 8 precinct committee.
Republican Darwyn Nelson, Cloverdale, will seek election to the Jefferson Township precinct committee.
Republican Marsha S. Carrington, Coatesville, declared her candidacy for the Floyd East delegate position and precinct committee.
Though candidates are being urged to watch their calendars for approaching deadlines, Putnam County Election Clerk Stacia Gibson is urging voters to do the same.
"Don't wait until the last minute to register," Gibson said, reminding citizens that voter registration will close 30 days prior to an election. The last day to register to vote in the May 6 primary is April 7.
