GHS captures five No. 1 seeds at sectional

CRAWFORDSVILLE -- The Greencastle Lady Tiger Sharks find themselves in a strong position heading into Saturday's sectional finals at Crawfordsville High School. GHS captured top seeds in five of the 11 events contested in Thursday night's preliminaries.

Greencastle has the best time in two of the three relays. The medley relay team of Kelsey Murtagh, Sydney Terry, Melissa Ball and Erica Soster swam a 1:56.29. The 200 freestyle relay team of Murtagh, Soster, Erika Collins and Ball also holds down the top spot with a 1:45.67.

Collins is also the top qualifier in the 200 free, with a 2:05.67. Soster captured the top seed in the 100 free with a 58.22.

Murtagh holds down the top spot in the 100 backstroke with a 1:01.79.

All told, the Lady Tiger Sharks placed 13 entrants in finals races and 11 in consolations.

For North Putnam, Katie Wilcox was the top performer, making the finals in both the 50 and 100 freestyle. Her 50 time of 27.13 is good enough for the fifth seed. She is also seeded fifth in the 100, with a 59.54.

The Cougars' medley relay team of Ryanne Lehr, Kiana Werner, Briana Smith and Wilcox is seeded 10th, while the same four girls earned the ninth seed in the 200 free realy.

For South Putnam, all three relays made the consolation races. The 400 free relay team of Tabitha Arnold, Samantha Tomasino, Chelsea Vance and Amanda Lund is the Eagles' highest seed at seventh.

Sarah New, Jessica York, Katie Sherwood and Lund are the eighth seed in the medley relay. Arnold, Tomasino, Vance and Lund earned the eighth seed in the 200 free relay.

Individually, York has the 11th seed in the 100 breaststroke and Lund is seeded 12th in the 50 freestyle.

All swimmers advancing to the finals will return to Crawfordsville for Saturday's second day of sectional. The diving competition begins at 9 a.m., while the consolation and finals races will begin at 1 p.m.
