Tiger Cubs fall to Warriors by 18 points

Friday, February 8, 2008

DANVILLE -- The Greencastle Tiger Cubs boys' basketball team traveled to Danville Thursday night, knowing that earning their 11th victory of the season against the Warriors would be a tall order, as they had been led all season by 6'8" sophomore phenom, Travis Carroll.

The Tiger Cubs fell behind in the first quarter, trailing 21-8 at the end of the first quarter, but Greencastle mounted a furious charge in the second quarter that closed Danville's lead to four points at 25-29 with 2:56 left in the first half.

However, Greencastle would never get any closer to Danville through out the rest of the game, suffering their sixth loss of the season to the Warriors, 73-55.

The Tiger Cubs matched-up well with the Warriors in nearly every statistical category, but Danville's Carroll, despite numerous defensive schemes used by Greencastle, scored 35 points and grabbed 18 rebounds, eight of those on the offensive end of the floor, and that turned out to be the difference in the game.

"We gave up 35 points to Carroll tonight, and a lot of those points came on put-backs and that to me is just a toughness thing," commented Greencastle coach Troy Greenlee after the game.

"We talked a lot before the game about whoever would be guarding Carroll tonight, needed to get the rebound, or at least keep him from getting it."

"We just gave them too many opportunities to get second shots and easy shots, and we just didn't have the fight in us tonight that we've had in the past few games."

"Hopefully, we can bounce back," added Greenlee.

Greencastle had two players scoring double figures, Austin Miller with 16, and Brennan Burks with 15.

Justin Bartrum followed with six, Ashton Marshall, Wade Huber, and Kyle Nobles had five each, Kendall Faust closed out the Tiger Cub scoring with three points.

Burks led the Tiger Cubs in rebounds with 10 boards and one blocked shot and Bartrum had a game-high eight assists.

In a hotly-contested junior varsity game, Greencastle defeated Danville, 39-34.

Jordan Hickam led the scoring with 11, followed by Damir Tarabar with 10, Graham Shuee had eight, Kyle Harlan added six, and Spencer Moore closed out the Greencastle scoring with four points.

The Tiger Cubs (10-6, 5-0 WCC) travel to Brazil at 7: 30 p.m.Tuesday night to play the Northview Knights.
