Arley V. Downs

Arley V. Downs, 83, Dana, died Monday at his residence.

Born in Vermillion County, he was the son of Wilbert and Iva (Jones) Downs.

He was a grain and livestock farmer. A graduate of Newport High School, she was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, earning the Pearple Heart, American Theater Ribbon, AEME Theater Ribbon with three Bronze Stars, a good conduct medal and a victory medal. He was a member of Hillsdale bible Church and Newport American Legion Post 184.

He married Louise Sillery Downs on May 28, 1949. She survives.

Also surviving are two sons, Wilbert Downs and wife Joelle, Terre Haute, and Gerald Downs and wife Shirley, Cayuga; sisters Melba McGuire and husband John, New Maysville, and Grace Elliott, Dana; six grandchildren, three stepgrandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by sons Steven Edward Downs and Dean Downs, and a grandson.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday in Overpeck-Gooch Funeral Home, Dana, with Rev. Jim Roland and Rev. Max Reese officiating. Burial with military honors will be in Thomas Cemetery, Newport.

Visitation is 4-8 p.m. Wednesday, and prior to services Thursday.
