Matthew H. Hayes

Matthew Hardwick Hayes, 25, Greencastle, died Tuesday as the result of a car accident in Crawfordsville.

Born in Greencastle, he was the son of Gerald D. and Shirley A. (Hardwick) Hayes.

He was a 2001 graduate of Greencastle High School and had attended Ivy Tech Community College. He was employed as a foreman with Morton Buildings in Cloverdale. He played softball on the local men's team, was a soccer player in high school.

Surviving are his parents, Gerald and Shirley Hayes, Belle Union; companion Terril Verplaetse; maternal grandmother, Virginia Hardwick; paternal grandmother, Mary F. Hayes; siblings Jeremy Hayes and wife Courtenay, Joey Vaughn and husband Justin, Robert Hayes and wife Karen, Torie Hayes and Adam Hayes; as well as aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.

His grandfathers preceded him in death.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Bittles and Hurt Funeral Home, Greencastle, with Pastor Hallie Taylor officiating. Interment will follow at Forest Hill Cemetery.

Visitation is 4-8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
