Local Wal-Mart drivers track miles for cash

During the week of March 16, 59 Wal-Mart truck drivers from the Greencastle Distribution Center will help raise thousands of dollars for the Victory Junction Gang Camp.

For every accident-free mile driven by Wal-Mart's Private Fleet drivers, the Wal-Mart Foundation will donate two cents for the camp located in Randleman, NC for kids with serious illnesses.

"We are really proud to support the 'Miles for Smiles' effort," says Blake Schowe, General Transport Manager at the Greencastle distribution center.

"With 59 drivers, we will play a large role in helping raise money for this event. We hope to exceed $200,000 as a fleet," adds Schowe.

The Victory Junction Gang Camp was created by NASCAR's Kyle Petty and his wife, Pattie, to honor their late son Adam. The camp is designed to help children with serious illnesses relax, meet new friends with similar illnesses and experience the fun and memories of camp.

"We are thrilled by this show of support from Wal-Mart's truck drivers and the Wal-Mart Foundation," said Kyle Petty. "This donation, backed by the efforts and commitment to safety on the part of Wal-Mart's drivers, will help give many deserving children and families a once-in-a-lifetime camping experience."

According to Schowe, this is an annual event in it's fourth year and marks the beginning of spring across the country.

"In fact, this event has grown so much that they are building a new camp in Kansas City. We are very proud to be a part of it," claims Schowe.

And, "Miles for Smiles" offers our drivers a chance to support kids and families at camp by driving safely -- something they proudly do every day," he adds.
