Breathalizer use approved for Greencastle post prom

At their regularly scheduled March meeting, the Greencastle Community School Corporation Board of Trustees approved the use of a rudimentary breathalizer device to randomly test students in attendance at the Prom and Post-Prom.

It was unclear how administration would determine which students would be subjected to the screening.

In other news, team members and sponsors of the GMS Science Bowl team were honored for tying for the state championship for the third consecutive year.

Claims totaling $263, 337.13 from companies such as Balfour, Duke Energy, and Pro-Alliance Energies were approved.

Supt, Robert Green announced in the monthly financial report that June tax receipts would likely be delayed and that the corporation would be using borrowed moneys to pay for what he referred to as "necessary expenditures."

Green went on to say that the corporation currently had $1,007,763.04 on hand.

Under old Business:

* Rajai Bimbo, current President of the NAACP presented the board with a list of recommendations he and his sub-committee are proposing that the corporation include in its student handbook. Bimbo stressed that student offenses that are racially and ethnically motivated are not outlined as specifically in the handbook as offenses that are related to matters such as sexual harassment. The board thanked Bimbo for his efforts and pledged to take his recommendations under advisement.

* The board approved the 2008-2009 school calendar.

* The use of a simulator for the Driver's Education program in the summer of 2008 was approved.

Under new business:

* A Dodge Ram utility vehicle was approved for purchase at $32,773.

* The publishing of bid specifications for a school security system was approved.

* The board approved a $500 donation to Deer Meadow as well as the annual 5th grade field trip to Bradford Woods.

Capital Improvements:

* Supt,. Green reported that recent wind damage at Tzouanakis necessitated repairs that would be covered by the corporation's insurance policy, less its $5,000 deductible.

Under personnel:

* Various personnel items were approved, including the resignations of teachers Virginia Trout at Ridpath and Christina Lesh at the Middle School.

The Greencastle Community School Corporation Board of School Trustees meets regularly at 7:30 p.m. at the Miler Education Center on the second Wednesday of the month.
