Judge denies man's request to have his sentence reduced

Thursday, March 20, 2008

A decision on a modification to the 18-year sentence of Bradley D. Long was denied by Putnam County Circuit Court Judge Matthew L. Headley Tuesday.

The court concluded that merely being in the process of rehabilitation does not compel a reduction or modification of sentence. Long will continue to serve his 18-year sentence at Pendleton Penitentiary.

According the document filed in circuit court by Judge Headley, "this Court concludes that Defendant Brad Long took the life of another human being with his bare hands. If defendant continues to be a model prisoner and he qualifies for the Department of Corrections two day for one day served sentence, plus the other time cuts he testified to, plus the sentence that the Court of Appeals thought to be appropriate, he may be out in as little as six to seven actual years."

Long pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter in the death of Putnam County resident Kelcey Sullivan in 2006. He was sentenced to 20 years with a two-year suspension.

Sullivan was beaten and strangled to death following an argument between the two men at Long's residence just west of U.S. 231 on U.S. 40, in 2005.

  • "he may be out in as little as six to seven actual years."

And yet he wants his sentence reduced, this is what leads to outrage from family and friends. Thank you judge, for not granting his request.

  • You talk, talk, talk about sexuality...Right or wrong on the subject of sexuality here is not the issue! This man killed another human being!!

They had been at a concert not a bar! This man named Brad Long arrived home ahead of Sullivan and laid in waiting and purposely attacked Sullivan and killed him.

Long let Sullivan lay injured without calling 911 for help, having no regards for another human beings life...he is dangerous to society! He has committed three crimes; #1 purposely laying in wait to attack another human being, #2 not calling 911 and getting proper help for someone in need of medical attention, #3 purposely causing the death of another human being by his own hands and selfishness!

What I perceive here is someone who was thinking of himself at the time of the injuries that he caused to another human being and is continuing to think of himself at this point of his life. That makes him a dangerous person to society, would you want to live next door or work with an individual that is capable of this type of behavior and personality?

He needs to serve his full term, 20 years, without any good time off...it is obvious he will continue to be a threat to society...

Thank you judge for not granting him his request.

  • On good behavior, or remaining on "Credit Class I", the offender will be released in 9 years, plus any time adjustments for educational completion. Most time adjustments are 6 months and 12 months -- but cannot exceed a certain percent of entire sentence time.

  • If Headley is saying this criminal can be out in 6-7 years, what in the world was the criminal wanting his sentence reduced to???
