Economic stimulus package workshop set

WASHINGTON -- Internal Revenue Service (IRS) offices in Terre Haute and Evansville will open this Saturday, March 29, to assist Hoosiers who are eligible for an economic stimulus rebate, but do not normally file an income tax return.

Rep. Brad Ellsworth is encouraging retirees, veterans and low-income workers to take advantage of "Super Saturday" to ensure they receive their economic stimulus checks. The checks were approved by Congress in February as part of a temporary economic stimulus plan.

"These rebates cannot provide the economic jumpstart we are hoping for if eligible Hoosiers don't receive them," said Ellsworth. "Super Saturday will provide assistance to 8th District retirees, veterans, and low-income workers who need help completing the simple, but necessary, paperwork to receive their stimulus checks. I encourage them to take advantage of this opportunity."

IRS employees will be available to help prepare the simple Form 1040A for retirees, disabled veterans, low-income workers and others who are not normally required to file an income tax return. These Hoosiers must submit the form in order to receive their economic stimulus checks.

To be eligible for a rebate, 8th District Hoosiers must have received at least $3,000 of income in 2007. Those who are eligible and filing individually will receive at least $300, while those filing jointly will receive at least $600.

In addition, individuals with dependent children are eligible for an additional $300 for each qualifying child. Hoosiers seeking assistance can go to the following locations on Saturday, March 29th:

* Terre Haute IRS Office, 801 Wabash Ave., Terre Haute. Hours of operation are 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

* Evansville IRS Office, 4933 Plaza East Blvd., Evansville. Hours of operation are 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
