Fillmore Town Council approves salary ordinance

Saturday, April 5, 2008

Fillmore Town Council members Jeff Osborn, Allen Jones and Wes Terhune discussed a number of items during their monthly meeting Thursday evening. They approved an Annual Town Salary Ordinance 2008-1, which sets town employee salaries at the 2007 rate. The council is waiting for the 2008 budget numbers before they can create a current ordinance for this year.

Salaries were set for the clerk/treasurer, marshal and deputy, town council, water, sewer and street departments and all other town employed workers.

The salaries were set as follows: clerk/treasurer $19,248; town marshal $12,458.25; town deputy $10,920; sewer inspector $19,477; water inspector $18,701 and town council $5,821.21 each.

Board President Jeff Osborn explained that an ordinance needed to be approved despite waiting for budget numbers for the current year. He also noted that the current board members have turned their salaries back to the town.

Council members also voted to perform street repairs in the town by renting equipment and using volunteers to do the actual labor. This will save the town $1,700. The county currently has equipment available to rent to mix the patch materials.

Osborn was able to borrow a flatbed truck to haul other materials and Jones along with several other volunteers will be doing the actual labor. They plan to start the project within the month and will take about four days to complete.

The Council also set public hours when Clerk/Treasurer Wanda Seidler will be available. Osborn explained this was necessary due to the workload Seidler has and the difficulty of getting all billing and other necessary work done with constant interruptions. The hours were set for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. weekly.

Resident Barb Tippin suggested blinds be put up in the clerk's office window which could be closed whenever she is working outside of the set hours, so she could continue to work undisturbed.

For the first time since the new Council took over they had a split vote. They agreed to rent out the Town Hall facility to outside groups and require a security deposit. Osborn and Terhune agreed to charge a $50 refundable deposit for the facility rental. Jones wanted the fee lowered to $20.

In other business the Council:

* Agreed to purchase a Hidden Drive sign for the town to be placed near Cemetery Road

* Discussed nuisance dogs

* Agreed to have Jones put a metal strip on the Town Hall west door rather than purchase a new door

* Approved a Waterworks Ordinance

* Discussed the emergency siren repair that is not yet completed

* Agreed to establish a Community Pride Week during April or May

* Discussed issues with salvage and scrap businesses

The Fillmore Town Council meets on the first Thursday of the month at the Town Hall. A meeting schedule is posted on their web site www.fillmoreindiana.com

  • Is it really fare for the town marshal and the town deputy to get paid that little amount? We see them out and about more than the others. Even though our town is small and not much really goes on here,regardless,every marshal,deputy,officer,or whoever, put their lives at risk to protect our community.
