North Putnam baseball defeats Speedway

SPEEDWAY -- After a 9-6 loss to Speedway on Monday, the North Putnam baseball team got back to business on Tuesday evening, winning 4-2 in nine innings and earning a split with the Sparkplugs.

Griffen Dahlstrom came through for the Cougars (4-1, 3-1 WCC) in the ninth with a two-run home run. He also drove in Kyle Rooker, who had singled earlier in the ninth.

Following Monday's loss, Cougar coach Norm Fish told his team they needed to step up and decide what kind of year they were going to have. He has liked the result of the talk so far.

"I challenged them Monday night," Fish said. "Those guys came to life and it was a great thing to see."

Tuesday's game was simply one the coach enjoyed being a part of. The Sparkplugs pulled ahead with a home run in the second, before the Cougars retook the lead with a two-run single by David Church in the bottom of the third.

However, Speedway came back to tie the score in the bottom half of the third.

From there, it became a pitching dual.

Jordan Berry pitched eight innings for North, fanning 12 while allowing two runs on five hits and three walks.

Rooker pitched a scoreless ninth, striking out one and walking one to pick up the win.

Fish said the Sparkplugs used three young pitchers throughout the night.

Seven different Cougars had one hit each. J.T. Francies tripled while Kyle Alcorn had a double. Berry and Brock Jones each singled.

"It was a real good baseball game," Fish said.

The Cougars host Rockville at 4:30 p.m. Thursday. A junior varsity game with Covenant Christian will follow at 7:30 p.m.
