Eagles win Cascade Invite
The South Putnam boys' baseball squad stormed into Cascade and came away with the Cadet Invitational title on Saturday. The Eagles defeated Cascade in game one 15-2 and downed Monrovia in game two 10-4.
"I was very pleased with the way we played both offensively and defensively," Eagles head coach Harold Campbell said. "Our pitching gets stronger every game and our lineup continues to be productive at the plate."
In game one, Brice Steinbaker moved to 3-0 on the season, pitching two innings giving up three hits and two strikeouts. Noah Boswell, in a relief appearance, threw three innings, racking up six strikeouts while allowing two runs and two hits.
Cameron Chestnut was 3-for-5 at the plate with four RBI, while John Spencer went 2-for-2 with two RBI and two runs scored. Spencer Smith also scored two runs, going 2-for-3 at the plate.
Boswell returned to the mound in the second game and didn't miss a beat. He pitched two innings, collecting four strikeouts with no hits and no earned runs.
Chestnut recorded a triple, scored two runs and had one RBI. In addition to performing well on the mound, Boswell was 3-for-4 with two runs and one RBI. Steinbaker went 2-for-4 with one RBI.
"I don't know if we have ever won this before and with a record of 6-1 this has to be one of the best starts to the season in school history," senior Adam Hammond said.
Campbell also acknowledged the contribution of Drew Cash. Although Cash never got a base hit, he was walked four times; scored four runs and had four RBI off of fielder choices.
South Putnam returns to action against Monrovia at 5 p.m. Monday.
