GHS tennis gets win over Wildcats

The Greencastle girls' tennis team continues to roll with a win over South Vermillion, 4-1 Tuesday night.

No. 1 singles player Kelsey Hennette made short work of Hannah Henry, defeating her 6-1 and 6-0. Kate Babbington made the move up to No. 3 singles, but was defeated by Brittney Spires 6-0 and 6-4.

The showcase match for GHS was in the No. 2 position. Marta Torre came from behind to win 4-6, 6-3 and 6-4. Torre was down in the second set but continued to battle and came away with the win.

"She just battled and battled and battled. She is going to help us. She's really learning. I don't think she really had much confidence in her tennis skills. I was just thrilled with her comeback," GHS head coach Trish Lowe said.

Where Greencastle's singles matches were good, their doubles were even better.

The team of Savannah Provine and Carol LaFoe took the No. 1 doubles with a 6-1 and 6-0 victory over Megan Slaven and Brittney Wright. In No. 2 doubles, Emma Kaiser teamed up with Kristen Flint to defeat Cassie Zimmerman and Ashley Hancock 6-1 and 6-2.

"I feel very good about doubles," Lowe commented. "No. 1 and No. 2 doubles were really in control of their match from the very beginning. I just think Emma did a great job transferring from singles to doubles."

One position that seems still up for grabs is the No. 3 singles slot. Lowe has three players Babbington, Katie Collins and Aubrey Merrell battling for the open position.

The junior varsity tied the Wildcats 3-3. Picking up wins for the junior varsity were Merrell, Katie Farris, Chelsea Samuels, Bridget Tucker and Brittany Elliott.

Greencastle (2-1) will host Speedway at 4:30 p.m. Monday.
