Greencastle softball picks up 5-2 victory at Rockville

Friday, April 18, 2008

ROCKVILLE -- Greencastle softball is on roll. The Tiger Cubs have won three straight following their 5-2 win over Rockville Thursday.

Briana Baker moves to 4-2 on the season after picking up the win. She pitched a complete game, throwing for five strikeouts and one walk.

In spite of getting the win, GHS head coach Dave Keller noted his team came out less than sharp but responded quickly to a tough opposing pitcher.

"It was a good non-conference win against a good team," Keller said. "We came out a little flat. We told them that's a mark of a good team when you can come out and still do exactly what you need to do to win the game."

Cassie Alspaugh and Veronica Sawyer had three hits each, with Sawyer collecting a double and two RBI. Hannah Spencer, Baker, Samantha Sillery, Sarah Land and Jessica Miller all had hits in the game.

Keller believes that the key to Greencastle's success against the Rox was due to their ability to perform well in all aspects of the game.

"They played good defense and had some key hits. It was a good win and we don't take any of them from granted. We're playing pretty well right now," Keller said.

In junior varsity action, Brooke Lewis and Krista Gardner recorded triples in the Tiger Cubs 7-6 loss to Rockville.

Greencastle (7-3) will travel to Danville at 10 a.m. Saturday.
