Eagle softball easily defeats Eminence, 17-1

Friday, April 18, 2008

A win is a win. But as a squad is gearing up for a conference matchup with an intercounty rival, an easy win is not necessarily what a coach likes to have. South Putnam is dealing with that dilemma.

Bailey Birt rips an RBI single to right-center field in the second inning of South's 17-1 win.

The Eagles completely dismantled the Eminence Eels to win 17-1 in five innings Thursday.

The Eagles hit the field running and never glanced back. They sent 23 batters to the plate in the first two innings and collected 12 runs in the process.

Bailey Birt and Alex Boyce led the Eagles, both going 3-for-4 at the plate, scoring three runs and tallying two RBI. Senior catcher Meghan Canary, Oceaia Boetjer and Katelyn Sibbitt recorded doubles in the contest.

South Putnam's only hiccup came in the third inning as Samantha Tomasino walked Kenzie Woods, then a hit by Kelsey Curtis was misplayed in right field to move the runner to third. Woods scored on the next at bat to give the Eels their only run of the contest.

Tomasino pitched a complete game, recording five strikeouts and one walk. Tomasino, in the second and third innings, tossed two changeups that had the Eminence batters swinging well before the ball crossed the plate.

After the contest, South Putnam head coach Evonne Canary had little to say. She was happy to get the win and to see her squad play solid softball for the entirety of the game. With the Cougars lurking on the horizon, the Eagles will have to sustain the momentum they seized against the Eels Thursday and prep for North's freshman overpowering pitcher Taylor Judy.

South Putnam sophomore Alex Boyce slides into home during the third inning of Thursday's contest with Eminence. The Eagles dominated from the opening pitch to get the 17-1 victory.

Canary also acknowledged that she was proud of the fact that her Eagles have come from behind in a couple of their games.

The Eagles will take on North Putnam at 4:30 p.m. Monday.
