Voter registration up this year

Monday, April 21, 2008

Voter registration is up 49 percent from last year.

With the primary election looming in the near future, many new voters recently scrambled to get registered.

Stacia Gibson, Putnam County Elections clerk, said, "We registered 1,529 voters this year between Jan. 1 and the April 15 deadline."

In 2007, the number registered in the same time frame was only 755. That is an increase of 49 percent.

Newly registered voters consist of actual new voters as well as those who have moved into this county's jurisdiction from either out of county or out of state.

"One of the most interesting facts about this year is that 954 of the 1,529 newly registered people registered between March 1 and April 15. That's 62-percent of the newly registered people in a such a small window of time," Gibson remarked.

The Primary election in Indiana is held Tuesday, May 6. Voters can submit their vote for the primaries early by visiting the Putnam County Courthou-se between 9 a.m. -- 3 p.m. Monday through Friday.

The two Saturdays before election, April 26 and May 3 are also available for early voting between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. Voters can also request to vote absentee at the clerks office by calling or visiting and mail the ballots back.
