GHS golfers place fifth at Braves Invite

TERRE HAUTE -- The Greencastle boys' golf team placed fifth at the Braves Invitational held at Rea Park on Saturday. The Tiger Cubs scored finished one stoke out of third place with a 327.

Wade Huber led the Tiger Cubs with a 78. He was followed by a quad of GHS golfers led by Luke Crimmins with an 82, Nick Pritchard with an 83, Eric Davis an 84 and Jim Wheeler with an 85.

After the meet head coach Donovan Wheeler had nothing but positive things to say about Huber's 78.

"I'm very proud of Wade's effort on the golf course, today," Wheeler said. "He got off to a terrible start when the season began, and his confidence flagged rapidly. He was playing too cautiously, and he was trying so hard to steer his shots that he had stopped rotating and was swinging laterally.

"He's the most athletic kid on the team, and his swing is all hands and instinct. He has to swing aggressively, and he has allowed his body to turn. When he does, like he did today, strikes the ball well. That feeds his confidence around the green, and the results become very obvious."

Wheeler also acknowledged the play of Crimmins and Pritchard but is still looking for more things for Wheeler and Davis. He believes that Davis knows is role on the team and has to rise to the challenge to met it.

"Last Saturday Eric did his job, and everyone else sort of bailed on him. This week it was a little bit of the reverse," Wheeler pointed out. " I thought he had turned a corner and had put these sort of meltdowns behind him, especially on a golf course like this. His role on this team is clear. He's the leader, and he has to play as such.

"His job is simple: he has to deliver a score. We've got to count on him day in and out," Wheeler commented.

Terre Haute South B and Turkey Run edged Greencastle by one stroke and Wheeler knows that his bottom two scorers are capable of shooting lower, which he says is both promising and disappointing. He knows the team will take the results from Saturday and build on them; including him.

"I'm sure we will all, myself included, use this to our advantage later in the season," he said.

Greencastle will travel to Plainfield to face the Quakers and Cloverdale at 4:30 p.m. Thursday.
