GHS tennis wins

The Greencastle tennis team moved its record to 4-1 Monday night with a 4-1 win over WCC rival Speedway.

Marta Torre turned in a gutsy performance for the Tiger Cubs with her 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7-5) win over the Sparkplugs' Allogra Gooratuz. After losing the first set, not only was Torre behind in the second, but she also hurt her knee.

"Marta really sucked it up and played some good tennis," GHS coach Trish Lowe said. "She was on the court for three hours. I was proud of her perseverance."

As the varsity No. 2 singles player, Torre was on the court when the match began. However, she and Gooratuz were also the last two players left on the court, even after all of the junior varsity matches.

At No. 1 singles, Kelsey Hennette defeated Speedway's Kace Nolan 6-0, 6-3. Lowe said Hennette was in control of the first set but was unhappy with her performance in the second.

At No. 3 singles, the Sparkplugs' Ayla Heffern defeated the Cubs' Katie Collins 6-0, 6-0.

On the doubles side, Carol LaFoe and Savannah Provine defeated Speedway's Kelsey Roband and Adrienne Runge 6-0, 6-2. At No. 2, Kristen Flint and Emma Kaiser won 6-1, 6-2.

Lowe said she was pleased with how all her doubles players have been performing. She was actually pleased with the team as a whole.

"I happy with the win, especially against a conference opponent," Lowe said.

The GHS JV won 5-4.

Greencastle visits Crawfordsville at 4:30 p.m. Thursday.
