Hartman House to sponsor volunteer week observance

DePauw University's Hartman House for Civic Education and Leadership will sponsor the 2008 Putnam County National Volunteer Week observed April 27 to May 3.

National Volunteer Week (NVW) began in 1974, when President Richard Nixon signed an executive order establishing an annual celebration of volunteering. Thousands of volunteers nationwide receive recognition for their commitment to service each year.

Last year, nearly 300 volunteers from Putnam County and DePauw were recognized for their commitment and dedication as volunteers who are the "links that hold our community together."

This year's national theme, "Volunteer to Change the World!" sets the stage for local and national organizations not only to applaud the efforts of volunteers but also to encourage others to get involved in helping strengthen their communities. Anyone may nominate a volunteer for recognition by visiting the Hartman House website.

All nominated volunteers will be entered in a raffle for great prizes donated by local businesses, which will take place at the National Volunteer Week Open House on April 30th. This event is open to all volunteers from the Putnam County and DePauw communities. Drop by the Hartman House at 500 East Seminary Street anytime between 4 and 6 p.m. to join in celebrating our local volunteers!
