GHS golfers win a pair

CLAYTON -- The Greencastle golf team battled some adverse scoring conditions Thursday at Deer Creek. While they did not emerge with a great scoring round, they did get a pair of wins over Cascade and Monrovia.

The Tiger Cubs edged the Cadets, 170-171. Monrovia was third with a 209.

Coach Donovan Wheeler was sure his team has some better golf in them.

"This wasn't a very good day for us," Wheeler said. "Eric (Davis) had a great round going. He opened with six straight pars, then he hit a speedbump on the final three, and it was just enough to turn a potential great day into a personal disappointment for him."

Davis' 40 was still good enough to win medalist honors.

Nick Pritchard had the next score for the Cubs, with a 42. Wheeler was pleased with Pritchard's ability to scramble.

"I thought that Nick's round was a good fight for him. He got himself in trouble all day, but he was able to at least minimize the bleeding in order to stay under bogey-golf," Wheeler commented.

Luke Crimmins and Jacob Collins rounded out the scoring for GHS with a pair of 44s.

"Overall, what happened tonight has been the story all year. These kids are very talented, and they are genuinely good people as well," Wheeler said. "I told them that they're the kind of kids I'd have no problem adopting in heartbeat.

"But, as competitors, as grinders, as shot-by-shot thinkers, we're just not very good. And that's what's killing us," he continued. "Either we're going to snap out of this and fight and scrap like we did last year, or else we're just going keep getting down on ourselves at the first sign of trouble and then go through the motions."

Wade Huber shot a 45 for GHS and Jim Wheeler had a 47. Tyler Hopkins added a 48, while Tyler Wade had a 52.

The Tiger Cubs (9-2, 33-13 overall) travel to Northview at 5 p.m. Monday.
