Cougar track teams handle Mustangs

Friday, May 2, 2008

BAINBRIDGE -- The North Putnam track teams hosted Fountain Central Thursday night in a windy and slightly chilly affair for May 1. The Cougars, however, were able to get the better of an undermanned Mustangs team and the elements to capture a pair of victories.

Kyle Adams won the high jump for North Putnam by topping 5-feet-8-inches.

The girls defeated the Mustangs 85-36, while the boys won 81.5-36.5.

"I was proud of the way the kids did. They seemed to give a good, hearty effort," North Putnam coach Kevin Lutes said. "I know Fountain Central didn't have all their top people running in everything, but even in the events they did, our kids put forth a good effort."

Jasmine Mimms and Cassie Preecs anchored the Cougar girls' attack, as each won three events.

Mimms ran a 19.97 to win the 100 hurdles and a 1:04 in the 300 hurdles. She also won the 100 in 14.61.

Preecs owned the field events, throwing for victory in both the shot put (28-feet-5-inches) and the discus (75-6.5), as well as winning the high jump (4-6).

Laura McGaughey also claimed first place in the 400 with a 1:13. Whitney High won the 3,200 in 14:30.

The Cougars also won a pair of relays. The 400 team of McGaughey, Stacey Stinson, Shannon Brock and Mimms won with a time of 58.2. The 1,600 team of Stinson, McGaughey, Jessie Small and Ashley Novak ran a time of 6:33.93.

The boys' team won 10-of-15 events with a balanced attack, as their seven individual wins came from six different athletes.

Tim Mason was the only Cougar win multiple wins, taking the 110 hurdles in 20.27 and the 300 hurdles in 45.56.

Whitney High won the 3,200 Thursday night with a time of 14:30.

In the sprint events, Jerrett Ban won the 100 in 11.92 while Griffen Dahlstrom took the 200 in 24.39.

Kasey McLaughlin claimed the 800 in 2:24.

In the field events, Shin Ryu won the long jump with a leap of 17-5.5. Kyle Adams took the high jump with 5-8.

The Cougars also won all three relays. The 3,200 team of Cody Paul, Dustin Breen, James Mangus and Dalton Harbison ran a 10:45.15. The 400 team of Ban, Dahlstrom, Darr Boruff and Mason won with a 48.86.

The 1,600 team of Mason, Ban, Ryu and McLaughlin completed the meet with a victory, running a 5:31.14.

"I was proud of everybody, from the winners to those who got us points scoring in anything," Lutes said.

The Cougars travel to South Putnam for the Putnam County Meet at 5 p.m. Tuesday.
