Fillmore Town Council discontinues bonus payment

Fillmore Town Council members Jeff Osborn, Allen Jones and Wes Terhune approved discontinuing a $500 per month bonus payment to water superintendent David Gilley at last night's town board meeting.

"We have done due diligence on this matter," board President Jeff Osborn said. "Our attorney advised us when we first took over the board four months ago that this was not legal, and we talked to David in an executive meeting about it."

Osborn also took time to thank everyone involved in helping patch roads in Fillmore.

"This was truly a team effort made up of volunteers from the Town of Fillmore. We had contributions above and beyond," he said.

All three council members spent time on the work crew, contributing a significant amount of time to the project.

Jones, a retired highway engineer, conceived and supervised the project from beginning to end. Bob Tyler assisted in the repair of equipment in preparation for the project.

"Both the town's street and utility employees participated in the project," said Osborn.

The board also discussed the upcoming Community Improve Week May 25-31. The clean up includes help from Putnam County Correctional inmates under the direction of Town Marshal Tom Helmer.

It will culminate on May 31 with a dumpster for trash and Tox-Away Day at the Fairgrounds in Greencastle for items that cannot be put into a dumpster.

In other business the council:

*Approved using the grassy area in front of the water tower per Putnam County Operation Life's request, for a helicopter emergency landing area.

*Approved Town Marshal Tom Helmer investigating acquiring two retired cars from the Putnam County Sheriff to replace the current cars used by town officers.

*Approved adding a part-time reserve (volunteer) deputy for the town.

*Discussed enforcement of not allowing dirt bikes and all-terrain vehicle use in town.
