Tiger Cubs pound Patriots

Friday, May 16, 2008

The Greencastle boys' golf team couldn't have picked a better time to start playing better golf. The Tiger Cubs defeated Owen Valley Thursday 154-213.

"To shoot a low number like that on a hard golf course and Windy Hill was tough today," GHS head coach Donovan Wheeler commented. "That was a great round for us."

Greencastle has struggle to find a blend of course play while keeping a mental edge all season long, but they've continued to find a way to win. With a recent conference title win and their No. 1 golfer seemingly owning each course he plays, the Tiger Cubs look to make some noise in the tournament.

Senior Eric Davis continued his strong play of late, carding a medalist deserving 35 to lead the Tiger Cubs.

"Eric's round was phenomenal," Wheeler said. "He's just really been focused. He's good to begin with but he's plays such a strong mental game and he's just able to focus on his round. Today was a challenge too because those guys he played with struggled. You really have to focus to be able to play when you're waiting a long time between shots."

Davis was followed by Jacob Collins with a 39 and Nick Pritchard and Jim Wheeler with 40. Luke Crimmins scored a 42, Wade Huber a 44 and Tyler Hopkins had a 46. Tyler Wade rounded the GHS attack with a 48.

"It was a great day. I'm really happy to start to see these kids come into shape," Wheeler expressed.

With his team coming into their own and beginning to gel, one question still remains for Wheeler. Who will be making the trip to sectional? Wheeler has had the good fortune of different players stepping up and getting scores when needed, but that make the decision on what five kids to take that much more complicated. Still unsure, he believes he may have the solution to the problem.

"I have no idea how I'm going to sort out sectional," he confessed. "We're going to have a 54-hole qualifier but good grief, the question mark will always be there. Did the right five kids win it? It will be really good.

"I'm hoping for my side, the drama side, which it comes down to one or two strokes. I'm sure for that kids it would be miserable, but we'll see," Wheeler concluded.

Greencastle will travel to South Putnam for their final match of the regular season at 1 p.m. May 27.
