Memories bring students back to teacher

Forty years ago, a second-year teacher had a class of six students who were studying advanced math.

That teacher was Roe Wrede, and he and his wife Linda have been invited to dinner with several of his former students from the 40-year-old class.

Kenneth Moore, a 1968 Greencastle High School graduate, put together the dinner.

"I located everyone a few years ago when I found my old high school math notebook from his class," he said. "We exchanged remembrances and all remarked about what a positive influence (Wrede) had on our lives and wondered what he was doing."

Wrede tried to instill good work ethics in his students.

"Mr. Wrede was a very no nonsense teacher and expected lots of hard work in his class, but he was also very respected for his knowledge and dedication to his students," Moore said.

Moore said his class has not made plans yet for a general reunion, but his math class buddies decided to have one just for Wrede and his wife.

"So on June 14 we are having a dinner in Greencastle for him and his wife Linda with members of the class," Moore said. "Unfortunately, we have lost one member of our class last summer, Rob Lyon, who was very fond of his Putnam County roots. However, so far we have four out of the remaining five members confirmed for the dinner, and I'm working on the last one."

Students in that 1968 math class include Moore and Lyon, Harold Henry, Kirk Hammond, Steve Bonney and Ron Cook.
